Notes for Parents

Parents are not allowed to attend the evaluations, including waiting in the lobby outside the Parish Life Center throughout the evaluation.

Upon arriving for evaluations, please have your child enter the Parish Life Center through the door closest to the Church, not the door closest to the school. Inside the lobby they will be checked in by the SCJN Athletic Board member manning the check-in table. Parents may accompany their child to and through the check-in process.

We also ask that you arrive promptly to pick up your child after evaluations and wait in the parking lot or outside the school-side gym door if you arrive early.  We understand that traffic and other circumstances are out of everyone's control, so any child who is not picked up within 5 minutes of their session ending will be asked to come back into the Life Center and wait in the lobby until their ride arrives. Please understand that the adults working these evaluations will have other responsibilities, including starting the next evaluation or shutting down the gym after the final session and they cannot be periodically shuttling children to and from the lot to check for a ride's arrival. Consequently, if you are late for pickup and your child is not waiting outside, please proceed to the Life Center Lobby to pick up your son or daughter.

The Evaluation Process

The evaluations will be conducted by a panel of three evaluators who do not have a child eligible for the group they are evaluating. Please note that for a player to be considered for an A team, a player must attend at least one of the evaluation sessions for their team, although it is strongly encouraged that, if schedule allows, candidates attend both sessions for their group.  Although each A team coach has their own preferences on how their team is handled, it is generally expected that players selected to play on our A teams will treat that team as their top priority among sports during the basketball season (Nov-Feb) and be able to regularly attend practices (usually 3 per week for A teams) as well as games and tournaments. Our coaches understand that illness, holiday travel and family commitments will require absences at times.  Please consider these commitments in determining whether your child will seek to be considered and evaluated for A teams.

If your child does not wish to be considered for their respective "A" team for any reason, please let us know in advance by emailing us at [email protected], if you have not done so already. For those families new to CYO basketball, please know that every child is guaranteed a spot on a B team and there are no "cuts" for the B teams. Depending on the number of B teams we have for a particular grade and gender, there may be a subsequent B team evaluation for purposes of dividing up the players for the respective B squads, but all are assured of a roster spot on a B team.

Finally, our volunteer evaluators have taken time from their busy schedules to take a close look at the skill level and abilities of our candidates in order to both field the appropriate A teams, but of equal importance, to make sure children are being placed in the best possible position to grow and succeed as basketball players regardless of skill level. While the evaluations are not intense and are fun for the children, we do ask that the candidates attend their sessions prepared to work, stay focused and not distract the other candidates or disrupt the evaluation process.

Good luck to everyone this weekend and we look forward to seeing everyone on the court soon.
